Giuseppe de Gobbis was an Italian painter known for Figure, Genre and Venetian theme settings. He would be classified as one of the Great Masters. This painting would have been executed during the yearly Carnival, famous in Venice.
He was exposed to painting by his father Jacopo Guarana, who had a studio in Venice. de Gobbis collaborated with his father, painting many frescoes and religious themed altarpieces.
Venice in the 1700's experienced unsurpassed lavish decadence with parties and entertainments. The tradition of masking has long existed in Venice. By the 18th century, Venetians were allowed to wear masks for six months a year. Black velvet masks, for example, were worn in "houses of ill repute", especially gambling parlours, to shield the owner's identity.
This is a party picture, on a different level from today. The lavish costumes and masks, the large room with its chandeliers, shows the wealth and richness of life for the Venetian wealthy.
This print is offered on Hahnemuhle Fine Art Paper printed using the Giclee method.
The size is 11 x 14, unframed.
