This " The Cut-Outs of Henri Matisse " rare vintage 1978 first edition collector's lithograph print softcover Modern Art book is an incredibly special and unique book to add to your library collection.
The softcover monograph survey Modern Art book is published by George Brazilier Inc. New York, printed in The United States in 1978, with compelling accompanied text by author John Elderfield.
In his fascinating introduction, John Elderfield, curator of painting and sculpture at The Museum of Modern Art new York, discusses the genesis and development of The Cut-Outs and their place in Matisse's oeuvre and in the art of The Twentieth Century.
Henri Matisse ( 1869 - 1954 ) the French born artist is known for both his sense of color and fluid aesthetic. Matisse is commonly regarded, along with Picasso as one of the most important artists who helped to define and influence radical Contemporary Art of The 20th Century. His mastery of the expressive language of color and drawing won him recognition as a leading figure in world Modern Art. Artworks by Matisse are included in the collections of many of the world's most prestigious museums.
In 1942, while recovering from an operation that nearly claimed his life, 71 year old Matisse turned to a new technique. By the mid 1940's, he had conceived The Cut-Outs as independent pictorial works. By the time of his death in 1954, he had created cut-outs of truly outstanding quality that drew together the threads of an entire life's work. Cutting into vividly colored papers, he compared himself to a sculptor carving stone.
Matisse's fascination with color and his joie de vivre are inextricably bound up in his paper cut-outs. In the artist's late oeuvre, regarded as the peak of his output, color, line, and form are blended into a perfect synthesis, exuding a visionary power that seems more Contemporary than ever before.
