Marimekko is a Finnish home furnishings, textiles, and fashion company based in Helsinki. Founded in 1951, it made important contributions to the world of fashion in the 1960's. It is particularly noted for its brightly colored Modernist style printed fabrics used both in garments and home furnishings. Two designers in particular, Vuokko Nurmesniemi with bold stripes, and Maija Isola with large flower prints, created hundreds of distinctive patterns and helped make the Marimekko brand products coveted by design aficionados, and a household name across the world.
The story of Marimekko's most iconic print " Unikko " ( poppy ) began in 1964, shortly after Marimekko's founder Armi Ratia had announced that Marimekko would never print a floral pattern. " flowers should only bloom in nature ", she said. The designer Maija Isola refused to obey Armi's orders and , in protest, created an entire collection of floral patterns. One f them " Unikko ", which has become a story of creativity, strength, courage and faith in oneself.
