This exquisite pair of architectural carvings featuring deity lions was born in India, where it was carved in teak circa 1740-1760 in order to take place in a monument. The sculptures show beautiful traces of the original paint, thanks to their excellent condition. The teak is carved with a great attention to detail to represent a guarding lion with an expressive character. The flat top suggests a use as a column base, perhaps in a temple. This gorgeous and uncommon carved pair of lions from the 18th century would be an impressive decorative accent in most homes, perhaps placed in a foyer or to decorate a tabletop or a buffet. See less
