Bender died … Read more An abstract female nude, oil on canvas, signed and dated by May Bender, 2001, front and back, unframed. Bender died in 2011 and this painting was purchased directly from her estate. It employs vibrant jewel tones and makes an impressive statement on the wall. There is also a photo of May Bender (not included), posing in front of her work at a gallery exhibition in the 70's. The painting measures 30"x40".

May Bender, a lifetime painter, produced artworks during her successful career as head of her industrial/package design organization and continued in her full time endeavors as a fine art painter.

After honors at the Arts High School, Newark, New Jersey, she continued her art education at the Art Students League of New York with acknowledged masters of art, Howard Trafton and Vincent Malta. Other studies in marketing and production added to her extraordinary knowledge of life and art.

Her organization, May Bender Design Associates, was engaged in industrial design, packaging and product design, and corporate identity. She wrote numerous articles for publication. Awards included: Package Designers Council International's "Packaging Person of the Year", 1985 and CLIO, 1980.

In addition, she taught design in packaging at the Parsons/New School in New York.  Mrs. Bender has had numerous solo and group exhibitions nationally and internationally, many of them in her home state of New Jersey. Furthermore, Ms. Bender has developed her own home studio where she presents many of her paintings and works on paper. Collected by individuals and corporations worldwide, Ms. Bender’s art is preeminent and dramatic.

“Between Dreams and Awakenings”
A painter with a true sprit of artistry in all her creations. New Jersey artist May Bender has an extraordinary eye towards compositions and detail. Employing both a grand sense of the overall picture, along with the small details, Ms. Bender demonstrates her tremendous ability in her works. The interplay between light and shadow, dark and bright hues, motion and calm reflects Ms. Bender’s extraordinary attention to all facets of painting. The artworks are sophisticated, complex creations, dramatic and moving in the way that very powerful abstract work can be. Another attribute of Ms. Bender’s art that should not undervalued is her sense of color. The paintings emphasize how crucial an intuitive capacity with color an be, whether linking crisp shades of cerulean blue or blazing swaths of orange. While the individual application of color is worthy of consideration and admiration itself, even more remarkable is the manner with Ms. Bender combines complementary and contrasting colors so precisely and effectively.
