A wonderful bronze abstract in the form of a female nude mounted on a terrazzo base. It is by the noted Mexican artist Jonas Gutierrez Castillo. It is signed Jonas 99 PA near the base. PA stands for Pruebas de Artista or Artist's Proof. The bronze has a beautiful warm brown gold patina. The base is a heavy terrazzo with lots of inclusions. The base has some losses to the edges which are pictured in detail. The bronze has some patina inclusions or spots, pictured as well.
One of the artist's more notable works is a massive bronze title the The Stone Eater on Puerto Vallarta's Malecon.
We've attached a biography of the artist courtesy of Galleria Dante of Puerto Vallarta, Mexico below:
Born in Guadalajara, Jalisco in 1966.
The artist began to sculpt at an early age. In 1980, he helped create the monumental public sculpture "La Estampida", which is located at a busy intersection in his hometown, near the emblematic building of the Hotel Riu.
Jonás Gutiérrez is known in Puerto Vallarta for his monumental 2.4-meter-high bronze and obsidian sculpture "El Sutil Come piedras", which was installed on the Malecón and was inaugurated on October 14, 2006 which represents a magician with a stomach of obsidian stone.
In 1987, Gutiérrez began working in the workshop of Ignacio Fernández del Valle, who became his mentor. In 1988 he made his first bronze piece, which he titled "Pieza Zoomorfa".
In 1989, Jonás ventured into wood carving and developed this technique for two more years, during which he sought to add an organic sense to his later creations.
Returning to the lost wax method, his sculptures seem to be more concerned about the search for balance in the composition and the suffering of the human figure; the female figure who flees or appears predominates.
A later stage would seem to summarize everything: animal, organic element and female figure; all in a compact composition. This stage comes to an end, when Gutiérrez begins to use a mineral element, the stone, within his pieces. His work entitled "El Sutil Eme piedras" appears and the one that deserved the recognition in 1998 of the October Salon, under the title of "Fusion". This stage would have a long development, which only in the preparations for its exhibition in the Televisa art space seems to accommodate a new proposal already announced, with "El Don Cuadrado" and the other characters who prepare to observe, dance and suffer the vision of life or unreality.
Jonás Gutiérrez Castillo has exhibited in the artistic space of the Mexican television network Televisa, where he presented a series of new characters.
Today, his sculptures represent misleaned clowns, pampering, harlequins, magicians, subjects in strange costumes and fire-devourers. All of them with a playful personality. less
