It is considered to be the holiest site for Christians in the world.

According to traditions dating back to the fourth century, the church contains both the site close to where Christ was crucified and the location of Christ's empty tomb, where he was buried and resurrected. Both sites are considered to be immensely holy sites to Christians.

In earlier times, the land was used as a Jewish burial site upon which a pagan temple was built.

The church and rotunda were built by Constantine in the fourth century. It was later destroyed by al-Hakim in 1009. Later it was re-constructed by Emperor Constantine IX Monomachos and the Crusaders, resulting in a significant departure from the original structure.

This photo, taken in 1857, truly depicts the antiquity of the architecture. The play of shadows and light show the facade as it may have looked long ago.
