The planter is decorated with 'gold leaf' squares that have been carefully overpainted with pairs of flying birds and delicate flowers, then lacquered. The flowers are cream, pink, lilac/mauve, apricot and white. All skillfully painted as is typical of Japanese pieces.

This is similar to the Byobu Japanese room dividers that are gilded. This gorgeous planter can be turned to have either the flowers or the birds showing. It is eye catching - it brings life and colour to corners that need a little brightening up.
The inside is plain white.
