Guo Dawei or David Kwo Da-wei (1919-2003) was a Beijing-born artist, who had spent his retirement years in Singapore. His oeuvre included traditional landscape painting, figure painting and flower-and bird genre. But it was his portrayal of small animals, especially cats and dogs that became his hallmark. Before he died, he donated 105 of his paintings to the Lee Kong Chian Art Gallery of the National University of Singapore. Born in Beijing in 1919, he trained at the Institute of Fine Arts in Nanjing, and studied under master painter Qi Baishi(齊白石). David Kwo Da Wei held his first exhibition in Hong Kong 1952. In 1953, he went to the United States, where he was exposed to the works of abstract expressionist artists such as Jackson Pollock. He was best known for his many paintings of cats, particularly his own black cat, Kim, who was made famous by his works.
