A fine and rare antique English mahogany campaign style folding work table / field writing desk from the 19th century. Features a rectangular paneled case with center hinge, opening to inset writing surface, on curule base with serpentine style legs.
Such portable tables were used by both the European upper class and officers in the military during the age of horse carriages or coaches for easy transport and setup during travel, expeditions or military campaigns. Designed to fold and be stored away the table was used during travel periods for a stable flat surface away from home.
