Tornquist initially studied biology. In 1958, he decided to study architecture at the Polytechnic University of Graz. Under the guidance of a professor named Winkler, Tornquist devoted himself to both sculpture and painting, concentrating on the figurative.
from 1959 onwards, he concentrated on an in-depth examination of color principles and color effects and at the same time began his artistic career.
Tornquist was interested in the political and artistic movements that were driving social change; he was a pacifist and refused military service. He moved to Italy. Thanks to the help of Getulio Alviani, he settled in Sesto San Giovanni.
In 1966, he organized his first solo exhibition at the Vismara Gallery in Milan.
In the same year, he took part in the Forum Stadtpark in Graz. In 1967, together with Richard Kriesche and Helga Philipp, Tornquist signed the founding manifesto of the "Gruppo Austria", which aimed to orient Austrian culture towards new artistic languages.
He subsequently founded the Team Color Group (1972), became a member of the Color Center of Tokyo (1974) and actively participated in the Surya Group (1977), theorized by the critic Enzo Biffi Gentili .
Parallel to his artistic activity, he began his career as a color consultant with a project for the Caffetteria dello Studente in Graz in 1966, in collaboration with Arch. Jörg Mayr, then he gradually began to deal with important architectural sites, among which he particularly emphasized the incinerator in Brescia (1996).
In 1987, Tornquist created a performance entitled "Apartheid" in his hometown of Graz, with the express intention of raising public awareness of all forms of life.
He was granted Italian citizenship in 1992, but retained his Austrian citizenship throughout.
In 1995, he founded the group Color & Surface: Barcelona-Milano-Vienna, which carries out chromatic interventions for public and private projects. This piece has an attribution mark,
