With Max Jacob and other friends, Picasso was a weekly visitor to the Cirque Medrano. The acrobats and circus folk intrigued his imagination, and around them he invented a life completely divorced from their actual existence in the theater.
Picasso develops the story of his saltimbanques in complete detail, and frequently presents them in the intimacy of their daily life. The Harlequin's Family is a genre scene, a glimpse of domestic routine. The father holds the child as the mother arranges her hair into an upswept chignon. The theme of a woman before a mirror will be constantly repeated in Picasso's art, as, for example, in La Toilette (please see our 2 listings of La Toilette Lithographs from 1954 and 1971, offered for sale at our Print Shop on Chairish). Here, his treatment is an informal as his method - delicate drawing lightly brushed with watercolor.
