This " Kenneth Noland : A Retrospective " rare vintage 1977 first edition collector's Abstract Expressionist lithograph print Mid Century Modernist hardcover landmark exhibition art book is an incredibly special and unique book to add to your library collection.
The hardcover art book with ivory cream linen covered boards, embossed cover and spine titles is published by The Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation New York, in collaboration with Harry N. Abrams Inc. Publishers, New York. Printed in japan in 1977 on the occasion of the retrospective exhibition at The Guggenheim Museum, New York. Preface by Thomas M. Messer, with accompanied compelling text authored by Diane Waldman, catalogue designed by Malcom Grear Designers.
Kenneth Noland ( 1924 - 2010 ) was an American Modernist painter. He was a primary force in the development of Postwar Abstract Art and one of the best known Color Field painters. He was considered an Abstract Expressionist in the 1950's, and as a Minimalist painter in the 1960's. He studied Bauhaus Design and color theory from the Modern master educator Josef Albers. Noland helped to establish The Washington Color School Movement.
In 1977 he was honored by a major retrospective exhibition at The Guggenheim Museum in New York, which this beautiful exhibition volume book is from. Instead of painting with a brush, Noland's style was to stain the canvas with color. The idea sought to remove the artist through brushstrokes, and made the piece more about the art not the artist. Artworks by Noland are included in the collections of many of the most prestigious museums.
This landmark volume is a critical examination of the artists work, published on the occasion of Noland's first major New York retrospective. Diane Waldman, The Guggenheim's curator of exhibitions, explains how this major Contemporary painter has drawn upon a great variety of sources and translated them into the independent and personal expression that made him one of America's most important artists.
The rare out of print 1st edition Abstract Expressionist hardcover exhibition art book measures 11 1/4" W X 8 3/4" H X 7/8" D, with 160 pages. It features 144 lithograph print illustrations, including 72 plates in full color. A detailed biographical chronology documents the artist's life, and a listing of exhibitions and reviews and a selective bibliography round out the volume.
It is in excellent " like new " clean vintage condition consistent with age, light signs of handling, and very light minor wear. Please see photos for condition reference. It is now being offered here for an excellent price. less
