The dynamic modern abstract paintings of Togolese artist Olympio are full of power and creative expression. Layered in acrylic paint and fabric on canvas, Olympio uses his entire body to create abstract works of art that pull one in.
Olympio was born into a large family of eight children in Lomé, Togo, West Africa. As far as he can remember, he has always been creating. He began his work by using building scraps to make sculptures. By the time he was in high school, he started to experiment with mixed media and collage. In his early 20's in the coastal city of Lomé, he would ride his motorcycle and watch the sky. The colors of the setting sun captured him and drew forward the pieces that have since brought his work into galleries around the globe. Olympio has since moved to the United States and now finds inspiration in Southern California.
This large 60 inch square colorful mixed media painting is signed by Olympio on the back of the canvas. His technique brings forth a powerful composition of color and texture. The many layers in his work further emphasize the texture and visceral nature of his canvases. The painting is wired and ready to hang. The sides of the artwork are painted and it does not require framing. Free local Los Angeles area delivery and free professional installation is included. A Certificate of Authenticity issued by the gallery is included.
Painting, for Olympio, is following a feeling. It is discovering the internal balance of a piece and recognizing beauty when it is unveiled: a happy accident. He starts with the blank canvas, a splash of blue, red, or whatever color speaks to him and goes from there. He uses oil, acrylic, brushes, his hands—anything he is inspired by. He scratches the canvas and uses paint straight from the tube. For him, there is no hidden story or elusive meaning behind each painting. The matter is in the material and the moment; a latent feeling within the power of his work.
Olympio's paintings have traveled internationally for exhibitions in West Africa, France, and the United States. His works are held in private collections internationally. less
