The Schönwald Porcelain Factory has a rich history. It was established in 1879 when Johann Nicol Müller converted his sawmill into a porcelain factory. Initially, it operated as a two-kiln manufactory, but by 1896, the factory had expanded to seven kilns with a workforce of 340 employees. After Johann Nicol Müller’s passing, his sons, Friedrich and Michael Müller, took over the company. In 1927, the Porzellanfabrik Schönwald AG was acquired by Porzellanfabrik Kahla, which was located in German Thuringia. Following World War II, when Germany was divided into two states, the Kahla porcelain factory’s head office was moved to Schönwald. In 1959, the old round kilns were abandoned, and porcelain production shifted to three tunnel kiln.
