A fine early 19th century Louis XVI period bureau à cylindre, or roll top desk, made of solid walnut with marquetry veneers of walnut, mahogany and cherry. Pine as a secondary wood. The surface of the cylinder has book matched walnut veneer and retains a nice shine. When the desktop is pulled forward, the roll top opens to reveal six small drawers, an open niche and a set of false drawers that may be removed to access a hidden compartment. Two large dovetailed drawers with decorative brass escutcheons. Brass pulls may not be original but are old. Working lock and one key which locks both the drawers and the roll top. Check the picture of the lock. Sturdy square tapered legs. Beautiful choice of wood with skilled marquetry detail. Good quality and craftsmanship, in excellent condition for the age. Minor veneer repair and some restoration on the back, but nothing structural. Signed and dated 1913 by the cabinet maker.
Overall dimensions: 48"W x 24"D x 43H
Height to top of writing surface: 30"
Total depth when desktop is extended: 33" less
