19th Century French Empire Revival Inlaid Walnut Vitrine is a splendid example of Old World craftsmanship in a style that was revived during the reign of Napoleon III. Utilizing hand-picked, beautifully figured walnut, the artisans created a stately yet tailored facade all around, with subtly curved crown just underneath the solid plank top. The top overhangs both in the front which is normal, but also a little in the back to reduce the gap between the piece and the wall when the base encounters the baseboard and/or shoe molding. This little bit of extra extension keeps things from slipping behind the piece ~ a simple but effective feature. The aforementioned subtly curved crown is lavished with figured walnut, and centered with an incredible marquetry inlay depicting an elaborately framed basket of flowers flanked by floral sprays. Similar treatment is on the corners flanking the glazed door, but with different scenes within the frame. The corners are also lavished with intricately cast bronze mounts above and below. The door opens to reveal three surfaces for display. A tailored base with subtle curves provides support.
