For your consideration, an elegant, English Chippendale style champagne coaster. Circa 1890 Made of sterling silver over copper in a very special patented technique “Triple Deposit”
Mappin and Webb a venerable old company that lasted from the 19th into the later 20th Century
Designed in a simple yet elegant Chippendale style
Heavy Plated Sterling over Copper
8” x2” Designed to hold a bottle of champagne with some shaved ice at the base
But you could put any wine in it
In very good condition slight wear and use in evidence…as it should be for a service piece over a hundred years old
The "Triple Deposit" means that a good quality plating was used in making your piece by electroplating deposits of pure liquid silver on the base metal which was probably a mixture of metals containing mostly nickel. The middle top configuration is merely a symbol chosen by the firm as part of their mark.
The combination of the trademark name words "Mappin and Webb's Prince's Plate -London & Sheffield" was used 1899 until the 1930s.The trademark name "Prince's Plate" had first been used in 1887.
The names of the two cities indicate the locations of the two factories Mappin and Webb had. These names appeared together in the 1890s. less
