This style of chair is known as "official's hat chair" because the projections over the rear stiles resemble the knobs on the black hats once worn by high-ranking administrators in Ming Dynasty. These chairs are high back and handcrafted and structured with wooden pegs and tenon structure, which is the very traditional craftsmanship for furniture making in ancient China. Intricate carvings of traditional Chinese design decorate the back splat of the chairs. Both the arms and the back splats of the chairs are carved with deep curves. The front panels underneath the seats are uniquely carved with a lot of details. Made from Elm Wood, the chairs are very solid and have been kept in excellent condition. Original patina and wear. Circa early of 19th century. This is an exceptional nice pair of chairs.
