Brimming with personality and charm is this vintage Andy Anderson chalkware horse and cowboy circa 50s or 60s. The horse is sweet-looking and stylized and the cowboy ... oh boy. He's a rough-looking bandit type with gap teeth and shaggy hair. The touch of an artist is so immediately apparent in this piece.
Andy Anderson (1893-1963) was an American artist known primarily for his carving skills -- and was the first recognized American caricature carver. In the 30s, he had a workshop at Southern California’s Knott’s Berry Farm and today his work can be seen at the Stark Museum of Art in Orange, Texas.
This chalkware representation of his work is rare ... and very cool. There is a light crack on the underside of the cowboy's hat and on the back brim of his hat (as pictured). There is also a small ding in the horse's mane (also pictured). But otherwise in decent shape for its age. The damage is accounted for in the price. In mint condition, this piece would be worth closer to $700. "HS Anderson" is visible in the cowboy's hat and "Andy" is scrawled on the horse's rump. Stand 12" tall, 8" long and 2.5" deep. less
