Henri Matisse ( 1869 - 1954 ) The French born artist is known for both his sense of color and fluid aesthetic. Matisse is commonly regarded, along with Picasso as one of the most important artists who helped to define and influence radical Contemporary Art of The Twentieth Century. His mastery of the expressive language of color and drawing won him recognition as a leading figure in world Modern Art. Artworks by Matisse are included in the collections of many of the world's most prestigious museums.
In 1941, while recovering from an operation that nearly claimed his life, 71 year-old Matisse turned to a new technique. By the mid 1940's, he had conceived The Cut-Outs as independent pictorial works. By the time of his death in 1954, he had created cut-outs of truly outstanding quality that drew together the threads of an entire life's work. Cutting into vividly colored papers, he compared himself to a sculptor carving stone.
Matisse's fascination with color and his Joie De Vivre are inextricably bound up in his paper cut-outs. In the artist's late oeuvre, regarded as the peak of his output, color, line, and form are blended into a perfect synthesis, exuding a visionary power that seems more Contemporary than ever before.
