Pablo Picasso ( 1881 - 1973 ) was a Spanish born painter, sculptor, printmaker, ceramicist, poet and playwright who spent most of his life in France. He is regarded as one of the most important and influential artists of The Twentieth Century. Exceptionally prolific throughout the course of his long life, Picasso achieved universal renown and immense fortune for his revolutionary artistic accomplishments, and became one of the most well known figures in 20th Century Art.
Picasso met Marie-Therese Walter, the subject of this famous portrait artwork, in 1927 when she was 17 years old. She became a muse and constant subject for Picasso. He portrayed her reading, gazing into a mirror, and sleeping, the most intimate of depictions. A single, curved line delineating her profile became an emblem ad appears in numerous sculptures, prints, and paintings.
Less a portrait than an homage to his mistress, " Woman with Yellow Hair " is rendered in a sweeping, graceful, curvilinear style that is a radical departure from his earlier portrayals of women. Picasso was influenced by the Surrealist's investigation into dreams as a portal to the subconsciousness, and the bright colors he chose for this artwork may represent dream imagery. This artwork is one of Picasso's most iconic compositions in his overall oeuvre.
Massimo Vignelli ( 1931 - 2014 ) was an Italian Modernist designer who worked in many design disciplines including graphics, packaging, housewares, furniture, public signage, and environmental design. he was the co-founder of Vignelli Associates, with his wife Lella. He designed the iconic signage and the route maps for the New York Cit subway system. His many important clients included companies such as IBM, Knoll, Bloomingdale's and American Airlines. Vignelli is considered one of the most concise voices and influential designers of The Twentieth Century.
