Born in Dordogne, Fernand Laval arrived in Paris at the age of 26 to study art and, during the early part of his career, painted beside Maurice Utrillo in Montmartre. From 1920, he exhibited frequently including in Paris at the Salon d'Automne and the Société des Artistes Indépendants.
Between 1927 and 1929, Laval traveled extensively, exhibiting throughout the Netherlands and Brussels. Upon his return to Paris, he focused on painting the landscapes around Montmartre, the Canal Saint-Martin and Les Halles.
Over the course of a long artistic career, Laval exhibited widely and with success including at the Musée d'Art Moderne, the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts and the Salon d'Automne. The artist's work is held in private and public collections world-wide including the permanent collections of museums in New York, Philadelphia and Rotterdam.
We are pleased to offer this luminous oil landscape showing an old tow-path beside a gently flowing river beneath a clouded blue sky featuring particularly delicate handling of the cast light and reflections by this well-listed French Impressionist.
