This Robert Motherwell rare vintage 1989 Abstract Expressionist offset lithograph print Modernist exhibition poster " Cor Anglais " 1976, is a very special and unique piece to add to your collection.
The Modernist poster print is published by The Montclair Art Museum, Montclair New Jersey. Printed in 1989 in an unnumbered limited edition on the occasion of " The Music Collages " exhibition at the museum. It features an artwork image originally created by Motherwell in 1976 titled " Cor Anglais ", from the collection of Mr. and Mrs. Robert L. Freedman.
Robert Motherwell ( 1915 - 1991 ) was an American Abstract Expressionist painter, printmaker, and collagist. He was one of the leading artists of The 20th Century and one of the youngest of The New York School group. Trained in philosophy he then became an artist regarded as the most articulate spokesman as one of the founders of The Abstract Expressionist Movement. He is best known for his Abstract works which reflect his acute awareness of the richness and complexity of human experience, that touched on political, philosophical. literary and music themes.
Born and raised on The Pacific West Coast, there he developed a love for the broad spaces and bright colors that later emerged as essential characteristics of his artworks. In the early 1940's Motherwell began to exhibit his work in New York and in 1944 had his first solo exhibition at Peggy Guggenheim's " Art of the Century " Gallery, that same year The Museum of Modern Art was the first to purchase one of his works. From the mid-1940's, he became the leading voice for Avant-Garde Art n America. He was also an influential arts educator and writer with such students as Cy Twombly, Robert Rauschenberg, and Kenneth Noland.
He was one of the most important collagists of The 20th Century and created a large highly regarded body of prints. His life affirmed the importance of Modernism, which he considered a means of freedom from dogma and unquestioning acceptance of outdated social and cultural norms. Artworks by Motherwell are included in the collections of many of the world's most prestigious museums.
The rare out of print Abstract Expressionist exhibition poster print measures 20" W X 29" H. It is printed on smooth finish paper stock with vibrant ink colors in a satin eggshell finish.
