A THATCHED COTTAGE NEAR WINDSOR
Oil on Panel.
Arthur James Stark was a pupil of his father, James Stark, himself a distinguished animal painter, of Edmund Bristow and a graduate of the Royal Academy Schools. He lived the greater part of his life in Windsor where he painted rustic scenes with farm workers and animals. He exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1848-1883, at the Royal British Institute and the Sussex Street Gallery among others. His works hang in the Victoria and Albert Museum, the British Museum and many civic collections throughout Britain. Stark's work at Windsor came to the attention of Queen Victoria who bought two paintings now in the Royal Collection.
