Chinese porcelain He Xiangu tongping pair, a matching pair of finely potted, sleeve form vases with polychrome glazed exteriors and white glazed interiors and inset bases. Each vase is decorated with two large cartouches, each formed with a floral Ru Yi lappet at the top. One cartouche encloses a finely drawn and detailed scene of He Xiangu, astride a deer carrying a lotus pod with her attendant, amid light blue and green clouds, and the other cartouche shows He Xiangu riding a fenghuang, carrying a sheng, amid light blue and green clouds. The cartouches are separated on each side by a symbol column of a lotus flower accented with artemisia, an endless knot, a Buddhist rose and a Taoist stone chime. The artwork is embedded in a dense network of curving, leafy flowering vines and Buddhist roses. The upper neck is decorated with a red trim line and a band of Ru Yi Lappets below. The foot is decorated with a tight band of Ru Yi Lappets with a red, trim line below. A red, Shen De Tang Zhi, Qing, place mark in Zhuanshu script within a square is glazed to their inset bases. Circa Republic of China era or earlier. The matching, finely carved, traditional, Chinese, hongmu stands are included.

Shen De Tang Zhi: Hall for the Cultivation of Virtue. Located in the Old Summer Palace (originally known as the Imperial Gardens), just to the northwest of the Forbidden City. Used as a daily residence by the Daoguang Emperor, who died there. Destroyed by European troops in 1860.
