Exquisitely … more A stunning very fine quality antique English stationary box in striking exotic hardwood coromandel / madagascar ebony. circa 1880
Exquisitely hand-crafted in England in the 19th century, attributed to one of London's finest decorative box and jewelry casket makers Toulmin & Gale, exceptionally executed in period Victorian taste with nods to Gothic Revival, featuring a dome-top chest form, locking with the original key included, opening to reveal a slotted interior fitted to receive writing paper and envelopes, retaining the original brown velvet lining to the hinged-lid domed top.
The box is made from the rare and exotic hardwood known as coromandel / madagascar ebony, at type of rosewood from Sri Lanka & India, with its brilliant color, warmth, depth, and richly figured grain patterns, it was highly sought after and has sadly now been logged to extinction. The box exterior is adorned with ornate polished brass strapping and rests on a green felt underside.
