Original antique chromolithographs from an 1875 British printing of Auguste Racinet's "L'Ornement Polychrome." Auguste Racinet was a French designer and painter who spent years working Ornament Polychrome, a masterful collection of ornamental designs of the time. The First Edition was published in Paris by Firmin Didot et Cie and was issued in parts between 1869 and 1873, with this being the first english edition also published by Firmin Didot in 1877. Following the style of Owen Jones' earlier title, The Grammar of Ornament, Racinet's work was praised for its exceptional level of detail, high print quality, and the ingenuity with which he laid out the collection of designs in each plate.
These plates from Racinet's section on ornament of the Renaissance. They depicts examples of ornamental detailing found throughout panels, friezes, and other architectural elements produced during the 16th Century. They have vibrant color and wonderful bright gold gilt detailing. It is an original antique print, not a modern reproduction.
These rare original 1875 color chromolithographs depicts over sixty five total different scrollwork designs and border patterns that date back to the 16th century. The green motif near the bottom of the first panel actually features the initials of King Henri II of France and his queen consort, Catherine de'Medici.
A unique feature of this illustration, which may be difficult to see in the digital image, is the use of gold ink that not only shimmers when it catches the light but also accentuates some of the finer details which might otherwise be missed.
These are beautifully and custom framed. They have been triple matted allowing extra depth and perception. Actual frame is hand gilt with gold leaf for a slight distressed or antiqued look. They are behind glass and ready to hang.
