James Mont is synonymous with the Hollywood Regency design of the 40's and 50's. He was born Demetrios Pecintoglu in 1904 in Isanbul to a Greek-Turkish family. The family emigrated to the United States in 1922. Mont eventually settled in Brooklyn, NY and opened an electrical supply shop where he purportedly began selling lamps to a Brooklyn mobster.(1) Thus began Mont's career and lifelong connection with notorious clients, for whom he produced lavish furnishings to match their larger-than-life personalities and expensive tastes.
He moved his lamp shop to Atlantic City where his relationships with
gangsters is said to have further evolved.(2) By 1932 he was operating a design design business on Fifth Avenue in New York.
Mont’s designs set him apart as a singular figure of the American midcentury. Straddling the overlapping worlds of Art Deco, Hollywood Regency, and Midcentury Modern, he conformed to and defied all of them. His work displays a heavy reliance on the chinoiserie style so popular in European design of the previous century. Feeling himself to be representative of “the Orient,” Mont was always trying to incorporate its aura into his designs. less
