Antique Victorian Bustle Chair or Bench. Graceful curves-shaped legs with scroll arms-the design inspired from the musical lyre. The hardwood has aged a rich golden colour and patina.
A stylish and graceful silhouette in the bedroom, dressing room, vanity bench, against the window in library or living room. Eye-catching statement piece reflecting the history opulence of the Victorian era.
History:
The bustle was an wealthy society fashion accessory throughout the nineteenth century replacing the hoop skirt. A desired attraction and fashion statement that exaggerated the curvature of the buttocks.
The Bustle Chair or Bustle Bench was created to accommodate this fashion. The open back would allow a lady to sit unhindered by the bustle and multiple fabric layers. It was preferable to painters as it flattered a woman and the portrait over a straight back chair.
Condition-minor wear from usage. Excellent condition by age. The wood frame, cushion, and fabric in great condition.
There are some missing decorative fabric nails. See photos. For daily sitting the upholstery webbing underneath could benefit from some re-work as some is tight and some loose.
