Dominik Skutecký (14 February 1849, Gajary – 13 March 1921, Banská Bystrica) was a Slovakian painter of Jewish ancestry. Alternate forms of his name include David, Domenico, Döme, Skutezky, Skuteczky and Skutetzky. He specialized in landscapes, portraits and genre scenes.
After 1873, he was a resident of Vienna, where he was mostly a portrait painter. His first major showing was at the Künstlerhaus in 1875. It was during this time that he met Cecilia Löwy, a model whom he would later marry. During his first stay in Banská Bystrica, from 1884 to 1886, he concentrated on landscapes and genre scenes from the local peasantry. He settled there permanently in 1889 and once more began to produce portraits of the area's notable citizens. He also created numerous paintings of the "Copper Hammer [sk]", a copper manufactory that was noted for its progressive management practices. Later, he organized art exhibitions, the largest (120 works) of which took place in 1902.
This painting was brought from Hungary about 20 years ago and kept as a heirloom. Upon purchasing the painting, we did a lot of research in order to determine the signature. It is signed black on black and almost impossible to be 100% sure if it is signed by the artist. The last 2 pictures are supposed to show the letters we were able to read and the last letter, which looks like an "J" is very similar to his other paintings where the letter "Y" looks like a "J".
There are some paintings by the artist sold on liveauctioneers and Invaluable and as you can see, his signature differs from one painting to the other. We found another which is quite similar to the one we have for sale. (see last picture). The painting dates back to late 19th century, early 20th century and there are few paintings sold with the furnace, called "the metallurgist" which depict similar scene.
The painting has been repaired at least 3 times as you can see the back of the canvas. This is normal for a painting which is over 100 years old. The beautiful gilded frame has a couple of chips upper left side.
The painting measures 26.5" X 23" and the view measures about 19" X 15". Condition is Very Good Minus given the repairs. They also show with UV. As stated above, while we are convinced that the artist is Dominic Skutezky, however, since the signature is hard to see, we lowered the asking price which we think it is worth.
Please contact us for additional pictures with or without UV. We will respond promptly.
