The old panel is enclosed in glass to preserve it.
The carving is surrounded by a 'woven' edge style border, rectangular in shape - depicting two pairs of battling Chinese warriors, their weapons and banner flags. The scene is being watched over by a man in a pavilion with golden steps. Two of the faces 'have been removed', this was typical of a period in Chinese history when partially de facing such art actually preserved them from being totally destroyed, possibly during the cultural revolution.
A powerful portrayal and a window into history.
This panel was probably part of a larger piece of furniture or room divider. Purchased from a collector of fine Chinese art.
