Pair of vintage handpainted images of Mexican village life. Acrylic paint is used to depict a riot of activities and folk motifs in these traditional Nahua cultural expressions. The paintings on amate, a bark of the wild fig tree, have a history of over 2000 years;
originally, natural pigments from local plants and earth would have been used. The bark is pounded and smoothed and the layers can be seen when closely examined, lending depth to the entire painting.
The ribbony colored borders are traditional.
This pair, unsigned, is likely by same artist.
Made in the 60's, the particular style is becoming more difficult to find.
