This Truly is a Outstanding Example of a North Eastern American Primitive "Backpack Basket". LARGE SIZE - SCALE. Circa Approx 1900. These Types - Styles of Baskets were Primarily Produced in the North Eastern American Region from the Up State New York Adirondack to the Northern & Down East Coastal Maine Areas. Many of these Backpack Baskets were Made - Woven by Some of the Indigenous North American Indian Tribes but this One has No Markings and I am not Qualified to Make that Determination. It is Substantially and Completely Hand Made - Hand Woven out of THICK - HEAVY Gauge Indigenous North American Brown Ash Wood Splint. NOTE ALSO That it has the Original Thick - Heavy Gauge Cowhide Leather Strap with Steel Buckles and Hardware Assemblies That is Partially Woven into The Basket Weave on the Front of the Basket. The Top Rim is Also Bolstered with a Thick Steam Bent Hoop - Ring. It is Totally Untouched - Exactly as it has Survived Over the Years when it was Recently Discovered in a Down East Coastal Maine Barn. It has That Wonderful Naturally Rustic - Primitive Aged Color & Patina That Cannot be Duplicated and it Displays Beautifully. It is Strong and Sound. It has Some Minor Honest Age and Use Related Imperfections as Follows - The Top Left Rim Area is Missing a bit of Basket Weave and has Had a Sinew Wrap - Repair Added. It has a Few Small Areas of Basket Weave Loss on Both - Each of the Sides - See Photographs. Backpack Baskets such as these have been made for many years they were Produced in Various Sizes From Children's to Adult This One Being a Very Unusually Large - Adult Size.
I Have Sold Quite a Few of These Baskets Over a Lifetime of Being in the Antique Business and I can Honestly Say that This is The Nicest Example That I Have Ever Had the Pleasure of Offering.
It Measures Overall Approx 22 inches Tall x 18 inches Long x 16 1/2 inches Deep. less
