Adolph Gottlieb ( 1903 - 1974 ) was an American Abstract Expressionist painter, sculptor and printmaker of a Jewish background. He was of the first generation of early Abstract Expressionists. During the 1920's - 1930's he formed lifelong friendships with other artists including Barnett Newman, Mark Rothko, and Milton Avery. Gottlieb and other artists became known as " The Ten ", they exhibited their works together until 1940.
Later in the 1950's Gottlieb formulated images that became known as the " Burst " and " Imagery Landscapes ". He created this type of paintings for the remainder of his career. They were variations of similar elements arranged in different ways. The series suggests a language of simplified landscapes with a sun and ground. He was a masterful colorist with his use of color being particularly crucial. He is considered one of the first Color Field painters and is one of the forerunners of Lyrical Abstraction.
He remained active throughout the 1960's, The Guggenheim Museum and The Whitney Museum in New York collaborated on a major retrospective exhibition of his art that filled both museums. This remains, to date the only collaborative project between these two major institutions.. He was the first artist of his generation to have his art collected by The Museum of Modern Art ( 1946 ) and The Guggenheim Museum ( 1948 ). Artworks by Gottlieb are included in the collections of more than 140 prestigious museums around the world.
