The Pop Art poster print was published by National Stamp Art, Inc in The United States of America in 1985 and is an unnumbered limited edition. It features an artwork image originally created by Kent in 1984 titled " Love Stamp ", copyright 1985 The United States Postal Service. It features a vibrant pink backdrop and is framed in a white frame.
Corita Kent ( 1918 - 1986 ) was an artist, educator, and advocate for social justice. At the age of 18 she entered the religious order Immaculate Heart of Mary, eventually teaching in and becoming The Head of The Art Department at Immaculate Heart College. her classes were an Avant-Garde mecca for prominent artists and inventors such as Alfred Hitchcock, John Cage, Saul bass, and Charles and Ray Eames among others.
Inspired by the works of Andy Warhol, kent began using popular culture as raw material for her work. After leaving the religious order, it evolved from figurative and religious to incorporating advertising images and slogans, popular song lyrics, biblical verses, and literature. She embraced the revolutions of the time including The Vietnam War, Civil Rights, and Women's Rights.
Throughout the 1960's her artworks with messages of love and peace, became increasingly political, urging viewers to consider poverty, racism, and injustice. Her innovative methods pushed back the limitations of the two dimensional mediums of the times. Artworks by Corita kent are included in the collections of many of the most prestigious museums.
In 1984 The United States Postal Service commissioned Kent to create an artwork based on love for a postage stamp that was first issued on April 17, 1985. The public enjoyed the characteristic splashes of bright color that graced this 1985 immensely popular Love issuance postage stamp, and more than 700 million of the stamps were sold. On New Year's Eve 1984, when a 20ft replica of the stamp was lowered from The Old Post Office in Washington, a crowd of 65,000 cheered and applauded. Although hers was the fourth in a series of five stamps using love as the theme, the Kent design is considered the best known and most popular. As with her art often, the stamp design carried symbolically as well as literally messages of hope, optimism and peace.
Sister Corita Kent succumbed to a long battle with cancer the following year in 1996.
