I needed a narrow … more This is a great example of repurposing -- a 1950s storage headboards becomes a sleek bookcase. I needed a narrow piece on a specific wall, and saw this storage headboard at a yard sale. Hmmm...how about cutting off the base, leaving only the storage part, and designing a new base.
And that's what I did.

I had my local iron monger make a base to my specifications, and together we figured out an attractive way to attach it to the modified headboard. Then I had the idea of covering the top part with raffia, which my upholsterer did for me. Note: the base is painted a pewter grey -- the next to the last photo is closest to the true color.

Voila! The end result is functional and good looking.

In addition to the overall dimensions, the interior dimensions of the shelf itself are 56" wide x 9.5" high x 7.25" deep, perfect for small books or whatever strikes your fancy! less
