A fine 18th century French Louis XVI marquetry commode, expertly crafted by master ébéniste Jean-Baptiste Lependu from solid oak secondary wood with tulipwood, kingwood and satinwood veneers, and original shaped white veined marble top. Three dovetailed drawers with cast bronze hardware and good quality ormolu corner mounts. Locks are present, but no keys. Rounded front corners and slender turned tapered legs. Excellent quality and in exceptional condition with a new French polish. Restoration on the runners of the drawers. This commode has expected wear with some cracking to the veneers but no actual losses or damage to the wood top or mounts. Signature stamp on corner beneath the marble. Jean-Baptiste Lependu (1759-1831) was a Parisian master ébéniste and son-in-law of the cabinetmaker Magnien. First established on Rue du Ponceau, he changed residences several times and last resided on Rue de Rivoli. Circa 1780-1800.
