Anni Elsa Frieda Fleischmann Albers ( 1899 - 19994 ) was a German born Jewish textile artist, printmaker, and jewelry designer credited with blurring the lines between traditional craft and art. Born into a creative family she began painting in her youth, and later in the 1920's studied at the famous Bauhaus School in Weimar.
Women were initially barred from certain disciplines at the school, unable to gain admission to a glass workshop with her future husband Josef Albers, she reluctantly entered the weaving workshop. She soon learned to appreciate the challenges of tactile construction and began producing geometric designs finding the medium of threads had won her over. She eventually became a student of Paul Klee, Walter Gropius and Wassily Kandinsky, further honing her innovative work and later becoming the head of the weaving workshop making her one of the first women to hold a senior role at The Bauhaus.
In 1949 she became the first textile designers to have a solo exhibition at The Museum of Modern Art, New York establishing her as one of the most important and influential designers of her time. Albers was approached by Florence Knoll to design textiles for The Knoll Furniture Company, where for the next thirty years she worked designing fabric patterns, some of which are still in production over fifty years later. In 1961 she was awarded The Craftsmanship Medal by The American Institute of Architects.
