A profusely carved Anglo-Indian hardwood table. circa 1900
Hand-crafted in India in the late 19th / early 20th century, likely for the English / European export market, featuring an elaborate animal naturalistic sculptural form, with flowering vines, cobra snakes, and elephants adorned with large ears and inset white painted wooden tusks. Two tier table, having a round top with intricate relief carvings, rising upon medial shelf center stretcher joined figural legs.
Dimensions:
Approx 25" High, 29" Diameter
As warm and attractive as it is useful, having the ideal size and proportions for a variety of different uses, including as a coffee table, chair side table, cocktail drinks table, lamp stand, end table, bedside nightstand, low center table guéridon, occasional table, and more!
Condition Report:
Good original unrestored antique condition.
Please note, the top of the table is warped. It's functional but does show age and construction related warping. Tables like this were typically done by two craftsmen. The table's carving was done with incredible skill and exceptional execution, but the artisan that constructed it was likely not as skilled or formally trained, as it's primitive construction. Mainly, one of the elephants is slightly longer than the rest, and over the last century the tabletop has warped because of that. Loss to one cobra. Overall a remarkable example, sure to add whimsical elegance, rustic warmth, antique character and charm to any space!
