In the summer of 1967 Stella taught a university workshop in Canada. His time there inspired a series of paintings named for places in the Canadian province titled the " Newfoundland Series ". In this series created from 1967-71, their titles referring to old villages and a bay located on the west coast of Newfoundland including Channel-Port Aux Basques, a town in the extreme southwestern tip of Newfoundland.
Stella has already been working on a series of paintings on shaped ( non rectangular ) canvases with designs based on patterns made with protractors.
