Bed warmers, or bed warming pans as they are also called, would have been filled with hot coal in the vented circular pan, then passed between bed sheets to warm the bed. Copper was the metal of choice as it provided excellent heat retention and passing qualities. The wooden handle was use to allow bed warming pans to be handled safely.

This particular bed warming pan features rare scenes of equines matched with natural designs, in a most attractive cover for the item. The top has an open flip lid, decorative detailed edges and a rolled lip. The wooden handle is deemed original to the piece and the period.

Today, bed warming pans are used for decorative purposes, whether hanging on a wall in a bedroom, living room, kitchen or other display area. less
