MacBeth Evans made this beautiful thin, translucent white glass called Monax and used it for their American Sweetheart collection to great effect. Monax glass is almost opalescent, so pieces will look blue in places and have a shimmering effect on the edges. This is a true white, not cream or an off white color with a motif that consists of a central burst of swags and scrolls. The design appears to be flowers but if you look closely you can see that there are no flowers, it is more like intricate paisleys and scrolls and curlicue shapes. MacBeth Evans made American Sweetheart for six years, from 1930 to 1936, making it one of the longest running Depression glass patterns. One thing you will notice right away with American Sweetheart that is true for most glass from MacBeth Evans, is that it is fairly thin and looks delicate. It is thin, in fact the edges look blue because the glass is so thin. But American Sweetheart is deceptively tough. In excellent condition for glassware that is over 90 years old, with random inclusions and straw marks, not unusual in glass, original to the manufacturer as a result of manufacturing process. One cup has an indiscernible underside perimeter base chip that is difficult to see (photo 10 & 12) that does not affect it beauty or utility. These beauties measure as follows:
Cups: 4¼” x 3½” x 2½” W/D/H (width taken from cup side to tip of handle); capacity to the rim 8 oz.
Saucers: diameter/width for each saucer varies from 5½” x 5¾”; height per saucer ½”
Together the set weighs 2 lbs. 7 oz. Absolutely beautiful pieces that will complement any tablescape or dinnerware you may often use when entertaining. For a collector of Monax or MacBeth Evans glass, these beauties are a must have or the perfect gift for someone who is!
