Offered is a vintage Susana Espinosa glazed redware decorative plate with an abstract portrait of a man, signed on the left corner, and dated 1976. The surface design is created by chiseling away sections of the glaze before firing to give a multi-dimensional and textured appearance. It is intended to be hung on a wall or displayed on a table rather than for utilitarian use.
Ceramicist and illustrator, Espinosa was born and raised in Argentina in 1933, studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Buenos Aires in the early 1950s before settling in Trinidad from 1961 until 1968, then moved to Puerto Rico where she became a renowned pottery teacher and creator of some of the island's most iconic ceramic mosaic murals (such as the Caribe Hilton Hotel (1970-73), the Prudencio Rivera Martínez Building (1974), the Palmas del Mar Hotel (1976-77), Squibb Pharmaceuticals (1978), and the Roche Pharmaceutical building in Manatí, PR, (1977), as well as the Bacardí Headquarters (1980)). She worked with Hal Lasky in the 1970s, and then formed a workshop in conjunction with her husband, Bernardo Hogan, and the ceramist, Isabel Rivera, and was a member of the International Academy of Ceramics as of 1989 (until her death in 2022). Her work is part of the Museum of Contemporary Art of Puerto Rico, Museum of Latin American Art, among many other collections.
The square redware plate (glazed in off-white with brown and light blue) measures 7" x 7" x 1". less
