This " Alex Katz Prints " rare first edition hand signed offset lithograph print hardcover collector's Pop Art exhibition book is an incredibly special and unique book to add to your library collection.
The hardcover art book with dust jacket is published by Hatje Cantz Verlag, printed in germany in 2010 on the occasion of the exhibition at The Albertina Museum, Vienna and Kunsthalle Wurth, Schwabisch Hall. It is hand signed and dated by the artist on the top right of the inside front title page.
It features an exhibition catalogue monograph survey of the printmaking artworks of the artist Alex Katz, with accompanied compelling text authored by Alex Katz, Marietta Mautner Markof, Werner Spies, Zdenek Felix, and Gunhild Bauer.
Alex Katz ( B. 1927 ) is an American Modernist artist of a Jewish background born in Brooklyn New York. Katz is one of the most recognized and widely exhibited artists of his generation. Often associated with The Pop Art Movement, he began exhibiting his work in 1954, and since that time has produced a celebrated body of work with expressive power that includes paintings, drawings, sculptures, and prints.
His earliest work took inspiration from various aspects of Mid-Century American culture and society, and over the past five decades he has established himself as a preeminent painter of Modern life. The distinctive poetic portraits and lyrical landscapes bear a flattened surface and economy of line. He uses characteristically wide brushstrokes, large swathes of color, and refined compositions creating a new and distinctive type of Realism in American Art that evokes a cool but seductive emotional response.
Since the 1950's Alex Katz's work has been the subject of more than 200 solo exhibitions and nearly 500 group exhibitions around the world. Artworks by Katz can be found in the collections of many of the world's most prestigious museums.
In his prints, Alex Katz reproduces, reflects, and reduces his motifs while retaining the deep, radiant, flat areas of color characteristic of his paintings. He works primarily with screenprint, aquatint, and lithography. The synthesizing effect of these printing techniques supports the two-dimensional rendering of his vision. He constantly refines the effect through close collaboration with renowned printers. The combination of supreme technical precision, with often extremely close-up views results, however in a freedom that refers the viewer both to the image, as well to the act of seeing themselves.
This special volume provides an engaging view into the development of Alex Katz's innovative printed oeuvre from The Mid-Nineteen Sixties through The Twenty First Century.
The book is abundantly illustrated with 214 beautiful offset lithograph print illustrations including 203 in color. The importance of this volume is further enhanced with a catalogue, biography, list of exhibited works, and bibliography.
The rare out of print 1st edition hardcover exhibition art book measures 9 3/4" W X 12" H X 7/8" D, with 240 pages. It is printed on premium paper stock.
It is in excellent " like new " very clean condition consistent with age, and very light signs of handling. Please see photos for condition reference. It is now being offered here for an excellent price. less
