Signed lower left, 'Roger Derieux' (French, 1922-2015) and painted circa 1960.
Born in Paris, Roger Derieux first studied at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière and, subsequently, at the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs. Early in his career, he also received painting lessons from Francis Picabia. Derieux first exhibited at the Salon Moins de Trent Ans and the Salon d’Octobre and, later, at the Salon des Tuileries, the École de Paris, at the Charpentier Gallery (1963) and the Salon d’Automne. He also exhibited with success internationally including at solo exhibitions in Paris, New York, Copenhagen, Tokyo, San Francisco, Oslo, Vienna and Prague among other cities. Over the course of a long career, he was the recipient of numerous prizes, medal and juried awards including at Grenoble (1964), the Musée des Arts Décoratifs, Paris (1965) and the Prix Lissone, Milan (1955). He also worked as a book illustrator, particularly for Symbolist poets including Charles Baudelaire for whose poems he created softly-modeled, interpretative figurative works.
Early in his career, Durieux experimented, successively, with Fauvism, Cubism, Surrealism and Abstraction and eventually developed his own uniquely personal style, integrating elements of all four styles into a soft pastel palette. In 1983, he abandoned figurative work and began to focus on abstraction forming a technique that allowed greater reflexivity. Durieux’s works may be found in the permanent collections of numerous national museums including The Musée des Beaux Arts (Grenoble), the Musée d’Art et d’Histoire (Narbonne), the Centre d’Art Contemporaine, (Perpignan), and the Musée Carol-August, (Salzburg), among others. We are pleased to offer an elegant still-life from the middle period of this notable French Modernist.
