An important and original painting on art board by celebrated artist Alvin Hollingsworth of Harlem, New York. Dating from the mid-20th Century and retaining the gallery label. From the private collection of a friend of the artist.
About the Artist: from Patricia Hobbs, Curator of Art and History - Washington and Lee University:
“Alvin Carl Hollingsworth (1928-2000) was a leading African-American artist and educator, who began his career as a comic book illustrator. He is notable for being a member of the Spiral Group, a coalition of black artists brought together by Romare Bearden and Norman Lewis in response to the organization of the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom planned for August 1963. In the 1970s, Hollingsworth painted wall murals for the Don Quixote Apartment Building in the Bronx, NYC. About the same time, he created a series of lithographs and paintings depicting the characters of Don Quixote and Sancho Panza”
As a teacher and artist, Hollingsworth is one of the premier painters of his time who challenged the status quo and wielded the power of art to facilitate inquiry and positive change in society. less
