Louise Nevelson ( 1899 - 1988 ) born Leah Berliawsky, was a Ukrainian born Jewish American sculptor known for her monumental, monochromatic, wooden wall pieces and outdoor sculptures. Nevelson's Cubist inspired wood assemblages transcend space and transform the viewer's perception of art. The dramatically conceived constructions became world renown since the 1950's. She created her own original visual language about myth and mystery with an interest in shadow and space, summing up the external world into a personal landscape. She is hailed and highly regarded as a pioneering artist and one of the leading sculptors of The Twentieth Century. Works by Nevelson are included in the collections of many of the world's most prestigious museums.
This special volume focuses on all phases of the artist's remarkable ascent to the top of the art world. The most extensive study of Nevelson to be published in over twenty-years, this beautifully illustrated book also demonstrates how her flamboyant personal style and carefully cultivated persona enhanced her reputation as an artist of the first rank.
Essays by distinguished scholars examine a wide variety of important issues and themes throughout Nevelson's career, including the role of monochromatic color in her sculpture, the art-historical context of her work, her acclaimed large-scale commissioned artworks that established her as a central figure in the public art revival of the 1960's, and her " self-fashioning " as a celebrated artist, particularly her origins as a Ukrainian born Jewish immigrant to The United States.
Offering a comprehensive look at Nevelson's career as a pioneering sculptor, this book provides essential information and insights into the study of a revolutionary Twentieth Century artist.
