Hindeloopen is a small town by lake IJsselmeer in Friesland, The Netherlands. Its unique culture originates from its past as merchant town and harbor. Hindelooper folk art dates back to the 16th century, where sailors developed a decorative tradition of hand painting domestic items to add color to the dark houses through winter. This paved the way for the establishment of a Hindeloopen folk art which involved handcrafting wooden pieces for domestic use and decorating them with hand painted motifs that included elegant flowers, leaves, acanthus scrolls, buds, birds and sometimes bible scenes or landscapes. Common colors used were reddish brown, blue, white or green as backgrounds and ochre hues, white, blue and red for the decorations. Favorite flowers were daisies, poppy heads, roses, chrysanthemums and tulips; faux marble paint strokes may often be seen on the rim or side of an object. This petite lovely was handcrafted sometime in the late 20th-century. Handcrafted from wood, the svelte oval shape has upward curved sides with cutout handles. It measures 14¼” x 10 ¾” x 2” W/D/H (height measured from the side); interior 14” x 10¼” x 1¾” (height measured from the side); weight just over 1 lb. Colors include brick red, mustard, charcoal grey. In excellent condition with age-appropriate wear. A warm and charming accent piece that will beautify any space and complement most any design style.
