Japanese Meiji Era (1868-1912) storage box in original wood finish and with original hand fashioned iron hinges, locks, and braces featuring six small drawers behind a single door, two bottom drawers with locks, a single iron handle on top, front door with lock.
Purchased in Japan in the mid-20th century this piece has been in one family for over fifty years and is a rare and hard to find example of a small Tansu, perhaps used by a merchant for holding things of value. One small handle is missing on a drawer and some small loss to bracing, but piece is in overall good and appropriate condition for its age.
Rustically beautiful and elegant. less
